Before Shells and Skeletons: Why 1.7-Billion-Year-Old Microfossils Matter for the Future of Life Science

For roughly 90% of Earth’s history, our planet belonged to microbes. The leap from single-celled bacteria to plants, animals, and fungi is arguably the most consequential transition in biology — and yet the fossil evidence for it remains remarkably thin.

Paleontologist Ross Anderson (University of Oxford) is working to change that. His team searches some of Earth’s oldest rocks for eukaryotic microfossils — the earliest cells with a nucleus and organelles like mitochondria. These “crown eukaryotes,” present by at least 1.7 billion years ago, are the ancestors of every animal, plant, and fungus alive today.

The challenge? Organisms older than ~500 million years had no shells or skeletons. Preserving a fragile, microscopic cell for nearly two billion years requires exceptional conditions — which is why Anderson’s group uses rock chemistry to pinpoint environments, such as ancient clay-rich coastal deposits, where soft cells stood a chance of surviving geological time.

The search is taking researchers to some remarkable places:

🔬 A ~100 sq. km region near Svalbard, Norway — once a shallow sea, now exposed Arctic rock at 80°N

🔬 Australia, where microfossils dating to ~1.75 billion years ago were identified just last year

🔬 Deserts and polar landscapes worldwide, where minimal vegetation leaves ancient strata accessible

Why does this matter beyond paleontology? Anderson’s clay-preservation work was originally motivated by astrobiology. Understanding which environments preserve early life on Earth directly informs where — and how — we should look for biosignatures on Mars, Europa, or Enceladus. If we want to estimate how likely complex life is to emerge elsewhere in the universe, we first need to understand how it happened here.

For those of us working at the intersection of life sciences and technology, this research is a reminder that some of the most powerful tools in biology are not new instruments, but better questions about where to look.
