For roughly 90% of Earth’s history, our planet belonged to microbes. The leap from single-celled bacteria to plants, animals, and fungi is arguably the most consequential transition in biology — and yet the fossil evidence for it remains remarkably thin. Paleontologist Ross Anderson (University of Oxford) is working to change that.
