Urban green technologies and biodiversity

The implementation of sustainable cities heavily relies on the integration of green technologies such as green roofs, green walls, urban agriculture, and renewable energy systems. These technologies play a vital role in fostering sustainability and addressing various environmental challenges. For instance, green roofs can mitigate the urban heat island effect by up to 40% and enhance air quality by filtering pollutants. Urban agriculture not only provides fresh and healthy produce to residents but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with food transportation. Sustainable transportation systems, including bike-sharing programs and electric vehicles, significantly contribute to carbon emissions reduction and improved air quality. Remarkably, bike-sharing programs in New York City alone have successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100,000 metric tons since 2013. Moreover, the development of urban green technologies drives innovation, generates employment opportunities, and attracts investments, particularly in achieving NetZero goals.

This themed issue focuses on new frameworks and advancements in green technologies within urban settings. The primary objective is to explore the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in megacities of both high- and low-middle-income countries, emphasizing concepts like the water-energy nexus, smart cities, circularity, and overall sustainability. The topics covered in this themed issue include, but are not limited to:

1. Air pollution control technologies and management
2. Integration of renewable energy in urban environments
3. Technologies and management for rainwater harvesting
4. Wastewater recycling and green technologies in urban areas
5. Promoting biodiversity through green technologies in transportation systems
6. Incorporating green technologies and biodiversity considerations in urban planning and building architecture
7. Green supply chain and logistics in urban settings
8. Green technologies promoting biodiversity in smart cities
9. Sustainable waste management and green technologies
10. Effective management of biodiversity in urban environments
11. Understanding the water-energy nexus in urban systems
12. Exploring the interrelation between water, health, and urban environments
13. Sustainable management of biodiversity in urban areas

This themed issue aims to shed light on these critical topics and provide insights into the innovative solutions that can shape a greener and more sustainable future for our cities.
